What couples in California should know before choosing a therapist, and where to start in your area.
In California, couples therapy can be provided by a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or licensed psychologist. A California license covers clients anywhere in the state, in person or by video. Check any license free at search.dca.ca.gov before you book.
The Board of Behavioral Sciences licenses LMFTs, LCSWs and LPCCs, and registers their associates. The Board of Psychology licenses psychologists. Both publish license status and public disciplinary documents through the Department of Consumer Affairs License Search. Our guide explains how to check a license and how the licenses differ.
The Board of Behavioral Sciences reported these current licenses as of November 11, 2025: 50,913 LMFTs, 38,309 LCSWs and 5,791 LPCCs (BBS board meeting materials, licensing population, checked 2026-11-05). These are board counts of licenses in the state, not listings in this directory, and not everyone licensed works with couples. A current count of licensed psychologists: UNKNOWN (we have not found a dated Board of Psychology figure yet).

Yes. A therapist with a current, active California license can see clients located anywhere in California by video. A therapist licensed only in another state generally cannot, apart from a narrow 30-day allowance for existing clients. See telehealth couples therapy in California.
Fees vary widely by area, experience and session length. Most couples therapy isn't covered by insurance unless one partner has a diagnosis being treated. Self-pay clients have a right to a written Good Faith Estimate. See cost and insurance and superbills.
