What is Imago Relationship Therapy?

Imago Relationship Therapy was developed in 1980 by Dr. Harville Hendrix and Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt. Its founders describe it as a form of couples therapy that focuses on transforming conflict into healing and growth through connection. Imago Relationships Worldwide, the organization that trains Imago therapists, says the approach is practiced by thousands of therapists in nearly 50 countries.

What are the core ideas?

  • Childhood and partner choice. Imago theory holds that we are often drawn to partners who echo important features of our early caregivers, and that relationship conflict can reopen old “childhood wounds.”
  • Conflict as growth. Rather than seeing conflict as a sign of failure, Imago sees it as an opportunity for each partner to heal and grow.
  • The conscious relationship. The aim is for partners to understand each other’s feelings and history more empathically and to move toward a more “conscious relationship.”

What is the Imago Dialogue?

The core Imago tool is the Imago Dialogue, a structured conversation that Hendrix and Hunt describe in three steps:

  1. Mirroring. The listener repeats back what they heard, without interpreting.
  2. Validation. The listener says what makes sense about the speaker’s view, without necessarily agreeing.
  3. Empathy. The listener imagines and names what the speaker may be feeling.

Then partners switch roles.

What are Imago sessions like?

Ask the therapist how they use the dialogue in sessions and whether they suggest practicing it at home. The founders also point couples to Imago workshops run by Certified Workshop Presenters.

Who may find it a good fit?

If you and your partner want a clear structure for difficult conversations, ask an Imago therapist how they use the dialogue. Some people find a set structure slow at first. A short consult call is a good place to ask how sessions feel.

How do I find an Imago therapist?

Imago Relationships Worldwide has a “Find a Therapist” page. Once our listings open, you can filter by “Imago Relationship Therapy”; therapists describe their training in their own words.
